Inspiring Mom for November 2006
Ciaran B of Ladera Ranch, CA
Number of children
Three
Occupation
Designer/Manufacturer/Writer
Interests
Reading, shopping, consuming buckets of coffee whilst gossiping with good friends. I am also completely addicted to reality tv - everything from Project Runway to the Amazing Race. As for charities - I have worked with several local childrens charities. But one of them, Kidsave International, is very near and dear to my heart. They assist older orphans, often acting as a last chance for kids that would otherwise have no future. They are amazing.
What advice do you have for other Moms?
Be easier on yourself. You don't have to look perfect or keep a perfect house. Get more sleep, don't be ashamed to ask for help when you need it.
Treat yourself to things you love once in a while (I believe that retail therapy, in limited doses works wonders!) and commiserate with friends. It's hard to remember at 4am with a colicky baby, but babyhood is so brief. It's harder to enjoy if you feel the need to live in a model home. Oh - and take TONS of pictures. Really, in about 10 years you will even be grateful for the bad ones that show what a disaster your house was and how badly you needed a haircut.
How do you make your kids feel special?
I surprise them with things that show I know them - a book about Snakes when they come home from school talking about snakes, or their favorite dinner. I try to listen to their stories like I would a friend, and not question or judge too much. And I shower them with appropriate praise for their accomplishments, display their art and brag to friends and family - making sure they are in earshot to overhear!
Tips on making it through the day
Coffee. I also find it helps to plan ahead when possible. I seriously keep three diaper bags packed and ready. Because if you have one, it will be out of diapers when you really need it not to be. I also believe in the buddy system. If you are having a tough day, a little adult conversation can turn it around.
What do you love most about motherhood?
the privelege of shaping little people and the honor of being so important to them
What's your favorite mommy accessory?
Bags. Bags. Bags. And strollers. I have a whole stable of both. I do love "stuff"! As a designer I am always looking critically at how things are manufactured. Which always ends up with me craving the most expensive items.
But there is no substitute for quality.
What funny motherhood stories do you have?
I have far too many to recount briefly, but sadly most involve poop.
Is there a quote you live by?
I believe in "what goes around comes around" and "do unto others". It's a karma thing.
